OK, fair enough. First it wouldn't scan. HP sells cartridges & gives away the printer. Then, two weeks later, I tried to print a page & suddenly (well, actually, after half an hour of trying to get it to print), it produced the scan I wanted two weeks ago. Then, after I'd tried everything suggested by the tech desk & every other forum I could find, I gave up. It ran out of ink almost immediately. I have not been able to get it to print, since. The effort was just too much for it.I didn't even get more than two good weeks out of it.
I may use it mostly for scanning, but why on earth would you want to buy a printer scanner for scanning and then have the printer part be absolutely broken. One of three things will happen at this point: it will continue to fail to not jam, it will grab more than one piece of paper (not evenly--don't trick yourself with that kind of mental image) and print on them, or MAYBE if you're lucky and you've been working for it for 15 minutes, it just MIGHT print successfully.Either way, this is the worst printer I have ever used and I hate myself for shelling out $100 for it and then not checking it more.
Like so many other negative reviews here, this printer FAILS horribly at not making up excuses to show you a paper jam error. HP has dubiously dubbed this machine a "printer/scanner," but the only thing that even acceptably works is the scanner part.
It will grab several pieces of paper and call it a jam and then spit out tons of paper for a half minute before deciding it has purged itself of any supposed jams and then attempt to print again. This printer has not printed correctly from the very beginning, and I only wish I had printed with it more when I first bought it so that I would have been able to take it back to get my money back (I mostly only used it for scanning, as I needed a new scanner around the time of its purchase.
I also could have used a new printer, but this is precisely the type of logic that HP is preying on). Please please PLEASE do not do this to yourself if you are thinking about buying it.
The answer is "you don't."
The reason seems to be that the printer is region blocked and only accept cartridges purchased in the USA. I got it for free when I bought my MAC. I moved to Africa and I bought new ink cartridges in France (HP original), but when I try to install them I get a message that they are incompatible, although they are for this printer (as stated in the box). Corporations are very much in favor of globalization, so they can operate in the whole world, but then they create problems for consumers, by region blocking DVDs, DVD players in computers, ink cartridges, etc. They want a globalization that works for them while they can exploit consumers by charging different prices and making it difficult for consumers to operate equipment in different regions.
I have used so many HP printers and this one by far is the easiest--nicest one I ever got. The printing is remarable and the pictures are fantastic. It sets up easy and fast and doesn't stop working after a few months like its conterparts do. It does everything even helps you order ink.
I've had many printers over the years and this one prints the fastest, clearest, and is easiest to use.The all-in-one function is so convenient, I can copy documents on a whim, even color ones at fantastic quality, much better than at Kinko's and I have to drive all the way there and wait in line. The scan is fast, I remember those "triple pass" scanners that took forever, this takes seconds. It is easy to use and easy to replace the cartridge. The ink doesn't run out fast like Lexmark or Dell.Like all peripherals you'll have minor problems along the way, but since I'm a computer guy it's a cinch fixing them, like finding drivers for my Vista, etc. I doubt anybody has ever lived with 100% perfect health.PROS: see above, great price.CONS: prints a little slanted
